I remember reading in my Adaptec manual that special care needed to be
used when mixing wide and narrow devices on the same bus. Since you are
trying to place a wide drive on a narrow bus (if I'm remembering the
original port correctly), I think you need to make sure that the 50-68 pin
cable you are using properly terminates the upper 8 data lines.
Or you might try making the wide drive the last device in the chain and
enable the on-board termination of the drive. That would terminate all 68
lines properly. Of course, you should un-terminate whatever narrow device
used to be the last device...
