This could happen if the key switch is set to the maintenance position.

as for the other open firmware problems i noticed:
>boot-file /boot/vmlinux root=/dev/sda3
I couldn't get my ans to boot until i left the boot file args blank. The
only way i could blank the arguments was to use the set-defaults command in
open firmware. The quik loader takes care of the boot file arguments.

Just my thoughts.
