Hi,
Well, I've finally narrowed it down, when I compile a kernel (latest
vger source) for my ANS500, if 'Standard/generic (dumb) serial support'
is configured as a Module, it works just peachy, however if I enable or
disable it I get a kernel panic immediately after after it initializes,
or would have initialized if it was enabled... the previous initialization
item is generally

fb0: Open Firmware frame buffer device on /fb0: Open Firmware frame buffer device on /bandit@F2000000/fb0: Open Firmware frame buffer device on /bandit@F2000000/54m30@F

on my working kernel, the next thing is:

PowerMac Z8530 serial driver version 1.00

is there some missing dependancy or something else haywire that causes
stuff go go insane?

nm
