ANS 500 Installation Problems and Life In General

Howdy! My pal and I are trying to get Linux onto our two ANS 500/132's...we had
heard rumors that a 9500 ROM SIMM, used to replace the original ANS SIMM may do
the trick, so we ordered one from AllMac ($700!) to no avail. We were about to
give up when,by chance, he happened to see a link to the ANS support section!
Gleefully, we tried to install the stuff using the instructions (we bravely
think we're familiar enough with Linux installation and Open Firmware to try
this), yet when we get to the installation "wait" screen, we got this message:

Comps file is not version 0 as expected, error unpacking archive ?unknown
error

...after which it promptly quit on us. That was with the g3installer.coff,
which I know isn't your installer, but I mention it for the setup to the
relevant story. We decided to try it again with your installer. We got just
as far as the previous one, but then got this message, partially hidden (we're
thinking) by the installation "wait" window:

nzip: stdin: not in gzip format

...and on the next few lines, it said:

install exited abnormally - received signal 11

Now obviously, the "not in gzip" format kinda speaks for itself (although we
have no idea what file[s] it's referring to), but do you think you could give
us a bit of advice on where to go next? W've tried re-downloading the files in
case we may have missed one (we're using a T1) to no success. Any hints you
could give would be much appreciated...also, let me know if you need any more
clarification as to what was going on when we tried installing it. Meanwhile,
we're gonna try a few more things. It'd be sweet to get these things up and
running on Linux. Hope to hear from you soon, and thanks!
