ANS 500 notes

This is a stock ANS 500/132 with 32 meg RAM and 2 gig ST32550W hard disk.

1) the 2.2.4 kernel works fine. I put separate folders of modules from
2.1.24, 2.1.125 and 2.2.1 into /lib/modules, symlinked to the folders
inside 2.2.1, and ran
/sbin/modprobe -c | grep -v '^path' > /etc/conf.modules
to set them up.

2) Improvements: Not until this latest kernel could I get quik (quik -vr
/copy) to actually make the 2 gig wide internal drive that came with the
ANS bootable.

3) I have two identical servers, each with the original Seagate ST32550W 2
gig drive. One drive is OK, but the other one prevents startup with the
following error sequence repeating endlessly on-screen:

ncr53c825a-1: restart (scsi reset).
ncr53c825a-1: Downloading SCSI SCRIPTS
ncr53c825a-1:-<6,0>: phase change 6-7 ncr53c825a-1:-<6,0>: phase change 6-7 7@01fdd4b0 resid=4
ncr53c825a-1: SCSI phase error fixup: CCB already dequeued (0xc1fdd020)

should be, so there is no ID conflict, and the problem drive is at the
highest ID so the drive letters in /etc/fstab won't be affected. Just
popping the drive drawer out (from bottom bay) permits booting to finish
successfully.

The drive works fine under the Mac OS on our AppleShare IP server. I also
installed AIX on the drive and the server boots and runs fine from that
too. Why does linux hate this drive?

4) My machine often has a nuisance hardware problem on powerup only. It
cannot poweron unless the SCSI drives are ejected and the red CUDA button
is pressed. Then the drives can be reinserted while the startup checks are
done before Open Firmware kicks in. Pressing the red button can be skipped
if you wait long enough (1/2 hour?) before trying to power it on. The
battery is fresh.

The drives can be left in if the power cable to the SCSI backplane is
removed and then reconnected after power comes on. There is only a trickle
of 60 millivolts on the +12 volt SCSI backplane supply when the machine is
off, but it seems to make a difference. Any suggestions?
