I posted the patched files needed to make our
v2.2.4 tree to provide a /dev/lcd device on

ftp://hellfire.dusers.drexel.edu/pub/linuxppc/v2.2.4/lcd_patches.tgz
The device major is 10 (character) and the device minor is
160 (it was free :-). There's a configure question that you
have to use to tell it to be enabled.
Just a warning - using the device on non-ans machines may be hazardous -
I don't check to make sure that the lcd device is there or not before
writing to it first...
