ANS 300? Yep, 300. I have one and the time has come to give linuxppc
a try on the box.
The 300 was a prototype that never made it out of Beta.
It's code name was "Deep Dish" and I have had one since 1997. The
whole project was cancelled while I was away in Europe on business
and when I returned there was nobody left at Apple in the program
after Jobs killed it and laid them all off. I was left holding a
prototype beta box. You can see pics at
<http://www.applefritter.com/prototypes/deepdish/index.html> (site is
in development)
I believe that it is functionally identical to an ANS 500 or 700,
since it has all the same components just in a completely different
case. I have a client who *really* wants to run his website
<http://www.applefritter.com> showcasing oddball Apple/Clone/Lego
hardware on this box and I'd much rather do it under LINUX than AIX
(4.1.5).
This "science project" has always been simmering on the back burner
and it is time to crank it up to boil. For the past several months I
have been collecting components (memory, disks, etc) that had been
cannabalized out of the deep dish for another production server ANS
700. I bought an R4 CD a few months ago too, but that wandered off
with one of my staff and hasn't been seen since. (At least he didn't
take my linuxppcTshirt!)
I'm wondering if there is anyone in the Seattle area that:
1. Has an R4 or R5 CD they could loan me.
(I don't have access to a burner anymore, and would rather use
CD over FTP.)
2. Has done an install on ANS hardware that would like to participate
in an install attempt. (its so much more fun to share pain like
this!) =)
I'm going to give it a first go Friday morning if I can track down
the AWOL R4 CD. Expect a few pleas for help here on the list as I
encounter any bumps in the road. If anyone wishes to lend some local
moral support please contact me offline (offlist).
