Thought it was about time to post an update about my attempt to install
the 1999 (or r5) on a ANS700.
Thanks to everybody who tried to help me, but i must admit that i've
made very little progress.
I've learned that the kernel of release 1999 is 2.2.6 and the boot disk
of Scott Every is using kernel 2.2.4. That is one part of my problem.
Please don't tell me to write my own kernel or something like that,
because I wouldn't have any idea where to begin. Please keep in mind
that I've never used Linux before (I've learned a lot during the last
couple of weeks). The first stage of the install went very smoothly
(...thanks to Scott) but since then I've made little progress. I think
the next step is installing kernel 2.2.7 and I've downloaded the
necessary files. The problem is that i've absolutely no idea how to do
this. I tried to find some information on the internet, but all I find
is information on how to build your own kernel (no way). Can anyone tell
me (step to step) how to install a new kernel including the patches and
all.
The next problem is that i can't get the Xserver running. When I start
the server, my screen flashes and I get the message that the attempt
failed. Has anybody succesfully installed LinuxPPC 1999? Any ideas.
Thanks,
Marco Jordan
