Yes it *was* very regular, exatly every 90.5 seconds as far as I could tell.
The problem was that X was trying to start automatically and kept trying
repeatedly, never giving up. one quick change to the inittab file and all is
happy now. much thanks to Andras Kadinger for suggesting this solution.
