Scott,

My understanding is that the current linux kernel (2.2.x) for ppc only
supports the first 256MB of ram. Something to do with the ppc mmu
handling ram in 256MB chunks and work not yet having been done in the ppc
kernel to address more than the first chunk.

You might check with one of the ppc kernel maintainers for details:
