As someone else noted, this is fixed with an ncr driver parameter to
disable tagged queueing given on the kernel command line at boot time.

I've had kinda the opposite. I stuck both a narrow and wide Quantum into
our ANS's and OpenFirmware would refuse to identify the drive and thus
would not boot from it (I was using proper back-plane connectors, so that
wasn't it). However, it if was a secondary drive, once the kernel was
booted, Linux had no trouble using it. I gather that this problem is
related to the version of OpenFirmware used. Our ANS's are using
OpenFirmware 1.1.22
By contrast, I've been using both narrow and wide Western Digital drives
without any problems. Models WDE4360 and WDE4360W.
