Hello,
I'm having a bit of grief installing YellowDog on an ANS500. I'm
following the info at ftp.emji.net (for the coff files) and
www.demonsys.com (for the battery stuff). It was the case that, by
chucking a floppy containing ins.ydl.coff into the ANS and turning the
key to the wrench mode, it gave me the:
0 >
prompt, with OpenFirmware1.1.22 at the top. From there I was able to type
boot fd0:ins.ydl.coff
and things happened... it was obviously reading the floppy etc. Can't
remember what it said afterwards, but didn't sound like an error. Then
took the battery out for a night (a la demonsys guide), put it back in,
rebooted and got:
cd
fd:diags can't OPEN: /bandit/gc/swim3:diags
...and it wouldn't let me redo the boot fd0:ins.ydl.coff, giving the same
error.
I ended up booting back into disk2:aix, thinking I'd be able to do it all
again. Then, in AIX realised the old battery is completely shot as it
kept defaulting back to 2022AD between reboots. So I changed the battery,
thinking this might be the problem with the ins.ydl.coff stuff. It's
still giving me the same error, but is again fine if I boot to disk2:aix.
I notice the demonsys guide says:
"From this point onwards, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO RESET PRAM! For some reason,
the ANS seems to hate a reset PRAM. So don't do it!".
... he wasn't kidding!
Any obvious mistakes?
Thanks in advance,
Ken
