You'll have to forgive me, I'm new to this list, but I was hoping to pose a
couple questions to you people...
I don't have an ANS of my own, but I'm seriously considering acquiring one
provided I can piece together the type of configuration that would most
benefit my needs.
Specifically, I'm looking for an ANS 700/150 or 200 in great condition but
for relatively cheap. Would anyone know where I can find one? I've been
monitoring eBay and other online auctions but don't seem to be having much
luck there...
Also, I've been told that the ANS motherboard closely approximates that of
Power Mac 9500s. Likewise, I've heard that the processor card on ANS's is
larger than that of typical Power Macs, so processor upgrades are
problematic. By chance, has anyone attempted Sonnet's Crescendo G3/PCI
500MHz processor card? This card fits into PCI slots (leaving the current
processor card where it is) and works on 73/ 75/ 76/ 85/ 86/ 95/ and 9600s.
For more information on this card, you can find it on
http://www.macmall.com, for instance. The part number is 52319.
Then, another person told me that Mac OS X would run on ANS's, although it
wouldn't install. Essentially, I'd have to install Mac OS X on another
computer and move that HD over to the ANS. Would Mac OS 8.6 work under Mac
OS X's blue box, though? For that matter, would Mac OS 8.6 work on its
own? I recognize that ANS's don't have Apple ROM, but systems 8.5.1 and
beyond technically have their own ROM copy. Does this mean they'll work!?
And a final question that probably won't work anyway -- since IDE HDs are
by far cheaper than SCSI, and I really don't need the speed or reliability
(since they're cheap enough, if one dies I'll just buy a replacement), is
it possible to find and put a PCI IDE controller in an ANS?
Thanks!
