The 1988 E28 M5

The E28 M5 started production in 1984, they were offered US only in 1988. There was a total of about 2180 units ever built (more info), and only about 1235 were imported to the US. My car was built in July 1987. The US Models were only offered in a black model with a tan interior - apparantly there were about 12-50 or so built with a black interior (I've heard that these were the Canadian models, however some have been reported to have been sold at US dealers in US configurations. Click here for more detail) - the European versions were in a wide range of colors. They were all hand assembled at the BMW Motorsport.

Check the links below for more detailed information and specifications.

History of my M5

The car was purchased in June of 1988 in Texas by Dr. Eric Gioia, and was traded in in June 1991 at 29K miles. The car was then picked up by Stanley Chen and lived in New Orleans and Lubbock Texas until I bought it in March 98 at 94K miles when it was moved to Seattle.

The car has had the following modifications:

- The front rotors have been replaced with cross drilled rotors to prevent warping
- The wheels have been replaced with 15"x7" cross spoked alloys
- The front suspension bushings have been replaced as well as the control arms
- The thrust bearings have been upgraded to those from the 750il
- The stereo has been replaced with an Alpine Cassette with CD changer
- An Ungo alarm has been installed, with keyless entry and dome-light.
- I've installed ///M logo air filler caps :)

- Replaced the muffler - 4/17/98
