The black interiors were sent up north to our Canadian neighbors. If you have a US spec E28 M5 with a black interior you indeed do have a bit of a rare find. Of the sometimes advertised 846-1146 cars imported into the county, I've heard only a handful came in with black interiors (I've even heard a number as low as 30). If you have a Canadian spec car then the black interior is pretty normal. Rob is right about the car and mileage. Very low for a 10 year old car. Lucky guy you are. FWIW. Jerry Chyo '88 M5 '72 tii
From: Skopp@WHAD.com Date: Tue, 9 Jun 1998 10:23:17 -0500 Subject: Blk/Blk e28 M5 Thanks for the many responses to my "rare black on black M5" question. For the digest, here's what seems to be the prevailing thought on the '88 M5. About 1250 or so were bound for the U.S. market. They were all designated 1988. It is likely that almost all (save 12-50) for U.S. came with a black exterior/tan interior. The remainder came with black on black, although until this thread, few have ever seen one, including Leo Franchi, who has probably seen a ton of them. I provide the specifics on my car for anyone out there who have access to BMWNA records and to confirm the above information. Its VIN is WBSDC9302J2875314. According to the door pillar sticker, it was manufactured in Sept 1987. The original factory window sticker indicates that its point of entry was D.C. via N.Y. It was then shipped to the dealer, Apple Motors in Manassas, Virginia. The sticker also indicates the model as a 1988 M5, Color Schwarz, Interior Black Leather. I think it's the real deal. Conclusion: mostly black with a few natur slipped in. Do you think the buffalo was chosen, in general, for Canada due to the harsh arctic-like conditions? For rainy Vancouver perhaps dolphin-hide would have been better. Colin McMillan 88m5
